When I first started writing a weekly nostalgia column for the Boomer magazine in the Advertiser, I had no idea that it would still be going strong in 2021. And that over the years I would discover so many remarkable and significant stories to tell about Adelaide.

Although we are still a very young capital and might not be seen to have as colourful a past as other cities, for one so young and so small, we punch well above our weight when it comes to a fascinating history.

The stories range from the post-war period up until the 1980s, or what is considered to be, ‘in living memory’ and dubbed the Baby Boomer years. That period was a most exciting time for our city and state as we emerged from a mainly rural-based economy into a powerhouse of manufacturing and innovation.

Adelaide Remember When: The Boomer Stories is a volume of reminiscences but also of discovery, childhood memories and a recognition of some of the great achievements that have occurred in our beloved city - it's a celebration of the Adelaide we knew growing up.

Sweet Memories

As I commence my journey through my 70's, I am reminiscing. I am not wanting 'the good old days' back, but books like this are fun to discuss with my age friends, and a great way to show the grand kids our 'wonderful?' fashion sense, and what our world looked like when Pres Kennedy was shot, the moon walk, the unbelievable insanity that took all teenagers over when the Beatles hit our shores. And ofcourse the disgraceful behaviour (I felt embarrassed) of my fellow Australians greetings to the boys returning from Vietnam.
